I have Secondary Progressive MS and have lived with the disease for twenty seven years. I have been under the care of a physician and neurologist for the past thirteen years. To this day, the only treatment that I have received is medication to relieve pain. Every two weeks, $300 is spent at the Pharmacist. I take high levels of…

1 Samuel 14:6, 71 Samuel 14:6, 7
English: World English Bible - WEB

6 Jonathan said to the young man who bore his armor, Come, and let us go over to the garrison of these uncircumcised: it may be that Yahweh will work for us; for there is no restraint to Yahweh to save by many or by few. 7 His armor bearer said to him, Do all that is in your heart: turn you, behold, I am with you according to your heart.

When I was 8 years old, my parents invited a missionary over for supper. All went quite well until this missionary looked at me and asked me the name of my favourite Bible character. Without a thought, I proudly answered, “Samson!” Now, I thought this was going to conclude our conversation until the missionary presented a follow-up question…. “Why Samson?”

I struggled for about 30 years, until I finally elected my favourite Bible character and today I’m pleased to be able to answer that same missionary question. My Bible character has provided me with some goals for my life. This being the first Sunday of 2003, if you’ve drifted into this year without any goals then perhaps there will be things for you to glean and apply to your life.

The setting takes place in Israel when Saul is King. The Philistines had set up three detachments from which they conducted raiding parties and were threatening the very future of Israel.

Jonathan said to his young armour-bearer, “Come, let’s go over to the outpost of those uncircumcised fellows. Perhaps the LORD will act in our behalf. Nothing can hinder the LORD from saving, whether by many or by few.” (7) “Do all that you have in mind,” his armour-bearer said. “Go ahead; I am with you heart and soul.”

Is There Not A Cause?

1 Samuel 17

I don’t know if you’ve ever found yourself in a battle where you knew you were outnumbered and outclassed. You knew you were headed for a whipping. About 15 years back, about a dozen guys from our Church thought we would challenge inmates and the Matsqui penitentiary at a friendly game of floor hockey. A noble gesture! We prayed for blessing. All looked splendid. Inmates were friendly and accommodating. I was enthused until I saw the score board. Torture inflicting inmates vs. skinny anaemic Christians. At the moment the puck was dropped until the final whistle, we endured full contact floor hockey. It didn’t seem to matter to these men whether you had a break away or even if you had the puck or not. I got tackled once while on the bench.

I discovered a whole new echelon of fear. Peters did not want to play let alone have the puck passed to me. Because of that experience, I fully understand the fear that the Israelites allowed to overtake them during Goliath’s challenge.
