Do you think Jesus can?
Mark 9:22
Jesus, “If you are able to do anything, have compassion on us and help us.”
It’s kind of like telling Roberto Luongo (Vancouver Canucks goalie), “If you can stop a hockey puck…”
My guess is that Roberto would be a little “put out”. If you were lucky, he would probably point to last night’s game where he broke the “shut out” record for the Vancouver Canucks.
The father that made that statement to Jesus in Mark 9 must not have known the record of Jesus, beginning with the Prophecies of him in the Old Testament (like Isaiah 53) and concluding to the fulfilled prophecy of his physical resurrection from the dead (Mark 16:9).
Yes Jesus Can!
If you have a subjective belief system, meaning that it’s dependant on the day or situation, then you need to check out the record that will change your “maybe belief”.
I bring this up because it seems easy today to have a casual faith. It’s not as though we need him to do anything anyway. We did not wake up today in need of Jesus or faith for anything particular. On the day that we suddenly need Jesus, we say “If you can…” A symptom of casual faith.
Paul said, “I want to know Christ and experience the mighty power that raised Him from the dead.” Philippians 3:10
Here’s my point: Get to know Jesus, his record and the many truths about him. Then, begin living this faith. Choose to do something that brings glory to God and demands the power of Christ and believe.
Any thoughts?
