A Bible Study in Colossians

Posted By Gerry on May 17th, 2010

If you are interested in having a  daily Bible study through the book of Colossians, consider using my Bible Journal as a daily resource.  It’s a great resource if all you want is to do is read through Colossians.

Excerpt: Colossians 4:2-6Colossians 4:2-6
English: World English Bible - WEB

2 Continue steadfastly in prayer, watching therein with thanksgiving; 3 praying together for us also, that God may open to us a door for the word, to speak the mystery of Christ, for which I am also in bonds; 4 that I may reveal it as I ought to speak. 5 Walk in wisdom toward those who are outside, redeeming the time. 6 Let your speech always be with grace, seasoned with salt, that you may know how you ought to answer each one.

The Story: Paul is famous for his style of writing.  He first teaches doctrine, that often takes the first half of the book, and then he tells you how to apply the doctrine.  In this passage it’s good to be reminded why we should do what he’s telling us.  “If you want Christ to be Lord of your life, then you need to do the following.”  That’s the subliminal thought here.

Chasing the Light – Psalm 27:1

Posted By Gerry on December 28th, 2008

This Christmas season we got belted with snow storms, the worst in our Pacific Northwest history.  We’re talking knee deep of a tall, disgruntled adult.  It was pretty if you had no need to venture outside or shovel it.

We purchased our home earlier this spring, long driveway, large parking lot and all. At the time I thought it would be a good idea to purchase a lawn tractor, a model that would allow us to attach a plow in the doubtful forecast of snow.  It turned out to be prophetic.

iamlight By 5:00pm it begins to get dark here and so scheduling your tour of plow duty was important.  As a result, our lawn tractor / snow plow and driver chased the light.  That poor little tractor worked hard so that it could get a breather during the darkness.

We chased the light.  In fact, we chased a lot of deadlines during this Christmas season.

And in the midst of all of this I thought of Psalm 27:1Psalm 27:1

27 By David. 1 Yahweh is my light and my salvation. Whom shall I fear? Yahweh is the strength of my life. Of whom shall I be afraid?

.  The Lord is my light.  No sunset.  No chasing.  No trying to get the job done in time.

Our Lord and our faith experience is not that way.

Where ever we are, what ever time, our Lord shines His light to show us the way ahead of us.  Don’t chase, trying to find the way alone.  Don’t work hard to earn the light.  He is my light and he is your light. He’s right here.

Rest.  If you don’t have time, rest anyway.  Living this life is so much easier when we take time to rest and wait on our Lord.

There is guidance, understanding, clarity and vision for the steps ahead in your day.

Are you chasing your day and working hard to find your way in this life?  Rest.  Wait. It’s the first thing. The Lord is not far from you.

Truths About God worth Pondering.

Psalm 27 is my encouragement.

Even during times of sadness, the truths of God found in this Psalm can draw you to look up and give praise.  This Psalm is about truth.  Whether or not we are personally experiencing these qualities of God in your life at the moment is not a reason to stop praising God for who he is.  Are you discouraged?  Begin thanking God for these truths about him and then meditate upon what these qualities.
